Unfancied Jennika Jason is one of the shining stars of the Mumbai Schools Sports Association (MSSA) inter-school tennis tournament. After losing in the first round of this tournament last year, the unseeded eight-year-old Carmel of St Joseph (Malad) player is all set to take on top seed Kyra Shetty of Jamnabai Narsee in the title clash today.

Yesterday, Jennika upset fourth seed Manvi Shroff of Jamnabai Narsee (Juhu) 6-3 in the girls U-10 semi-final at the Maharashtra State Lawn Tennis Association (MSLTA) courts. Kyra defeated fifth seed Saloni Dey 6-4 in the other semi-final.

Jennika raced to a 2-0 lead initially, but Manvi clawed her way back into groove with a brilliant top spin to open her account. While Manvi engaged in long rallies, the diminutive Jennika confidently returned her shots and soon raced to 4-2. Manvi managed to grab a couple of more points before Jennika executed a forehand smash to seal the match.
Banking on QF experience
Jennika said her experience of beating second seed Asmi Koli of Convent of Jesus and Mary (Fort) 6-5 in the quarter-final will help her in the final. "Defeating the second seed has given me a lot of confidence. I hope to carry the confidence in the final and not think about the result. My quarter-final match was more tiring and close than today," Jennika said.
