In A bid to promote young talent, singer Kailash Kher is launching six new musicians with a band called SurFira at the Nehru Centre Auditorium tomorrow at 7pm. The singer says it's his way of giving back to society, and fulfilling legendary ghazal singer, late Jagjit Singh's dream.

"There's no dearth of musical talent and training in our country. Musicians, who are trained under stalwarts, often don't get enough opportunities to showcase their skills. SurFira is my way of giving back to society. I have picked a bunch of talented musicians, who are interested in the beautiful genre, nurtured them and offered them a stage," says Kher, adding, "When I started out, I didn't have a launch pad. So, it was my dream to provide promising musicians the right platform."

Coming up with SurFira is also his first step towards ensuring that the legacy of ghazal is carried forward. Kher credits Singh for giving him the idea years ago. "Jagjitji did his last few recordings at our studio. During a casual chat. I asked him, 'Papaji, you have taken ghazal to such heights that the next generation will only enjoy the genre in their dream, because I can't see any new artistes taking over.' So, he casually responded, 'Tussi karo ae kaam. I feel you can do it because the youth is connected to your music'."

The Allah Ke Bande singer adds he always wanted to empower musicians. "I am amazed at how the universe conspired. I am so happy to have been able to fulfil Jagjitji's dream," he says.

Sreekant Krishnamurthy, a member of SurFira , can't thank Kher enough: "We feel privileged that he nurtured us and will guide us in our musical journey."

Along with SurFiras, Kher will also launch a six-member folk rock band, Indie Routes.
