His 13-year run ended after Kalmadi received 18 votes, but lost by two to Qatar’s Jumaan Al-Hamad on the opening day of the continental body’s two-day Congress in the city. It was the only hat Kalmadi was wearing apart from that of a member of parliament.
The 20th AAA Congress, before the July 3-7 Asian Athletics Championships, was also attended by International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) President Lamine Diack. Al Hamad is Qatar Athletics Federation President and also senior vice-president of the Asian body.
While BJP city president Anil Shirole who fought the 2009 Lok Sabha election against Kalmadi and was defeated by 25,000 votes said Congress should now rethink its choice of candidates while giving them tickets, and even if the party allows Kalmadi to contest the 2014 Lok Sabha poll, he would be denied by the voters.
