Kandivali resident Manthan Rane has won India's first-ever silver medal in Muay Thai (Thai kick boxing) at the Asian Muay Championship 2012 held in Vietnam this month
Manthan facing fierce competition from international champions from Vietnam, Taiwan and Bangladesh ensured India a podium position on his debut in national colours.
A Class X student at Thakur Public School, Kandivli (East), Manthan clinched gold at the National Championships held last May in Bangalore, a performance which led to his selection for the Asian Championship.

Balkrishna Shetty, who mentored and coached Manthan for this championship had urged his parents (mother Mitali and father Mukesh) to allow him to continue his interest in this sport. “The lad was always driven by Muay Thai. With complete belief, fierce dedication and hard work from the age of four, Manthan achieved his Black Belt in karate at the age of 13 under coach Harikesh Singh. After this, he came to me at Total Combat Fitness and we ensured that every effort is put in by the boy to pave a successful path,” said Shetty.
