Kanga hero Shinde aims for Mumbai selection

Promotion is dear to everyone and Greater Mumbai Police Sports Club's Santosh Shinde is no different. Police Naik (PN), a rank above constable, with Mumbai Police, Shinde is hoping to get good rewards after leading his club to its maiden Strategen Dr H D Kanga Cricket League title yesterday.

The 29-year-old right-arm swing bowler, who took 7-88 (which included four wickets in five balls), helped restrict Shivaji Park Youngsters to 160, a score which Mumbai Police chased down successfully. Shinde will become Head Constable if he plays the Ranji Trophy this year.

"I am hoping to be selected to play in the Ranji Trophy this year, especially after such a good start to the season," Shinde, who was the highest wicket-taker of the tournament with 32 wickets, told MiD DAY.

Shinde played one Ranji Trophy for Goa last year, but was out of favour this season. Although the probables list for the Mumbai Ranji Trophy squad is out, Shinde is still hopeful to make the cut for his favourite team. "My dream is to play Ranji Trophy for Mumbai. I am sure the selectors will look into my Kanga League performance.

They have accommodated players who were not in the probables list in the squad," added the Chembur-resident.

The onus was on Shinde to deliver another dazzling performance in a close fight for the title between Mumbai Police, MIG, Karnataka SA and New Hind CC. "A lot was expected from me as I was performing well. I was tense the whole week worrying about my performance. I could not sleep last night as well. I am happy and relieved that I clicked on an important day for my club. I would have been disappointed if I had failed to perform today," he said.

Brief score:
Shivaji Park Youngsters 160 (Shardul Thakur n.o. 40, Santosh Shinde 7/88)
lost to Greater Mumbai Police 174-6 (Rohan Bagade 43).
