Kangana Ranaut: I am prepared for all the fights that I am drawn into

Despite her absence from social media, Kangana Ranaut has joined the legions of women attempting to shed light on how widespread sexual harassment is. Running with the hashtag 'MeToo', a social media trend has brought together women from across the globe, especially the UK, US, India and Pakistan, by encouraging them to reveal their stories of assault. Ranaut's name was attached with the trend when a fan applauded the actor on social media for opening up about the harassment she faced as a debutante in the film industry. Within no time, Ranaut found praise in other woman, who used the hashtag 'KanganaToo' to share her story.

Ranaut tells mid-day, "I've always taken a stand against issues I condemn, physical abuse, exploitation, sexual harassment and pay disparity being a few among them. I am prepared for all the fights I will be drawn into as a result of speaking up. We [women] need to know that life will not be easy. Our generation may not even benefit from our effort. But, even the freedom we've been given today is a result of the fights that our elders fought for us. We have to do the same." The actor says she's happy to use her celebrity status to further causes.

The #MeToo trend garnered the attention of social media users who decided to speak up about sexual harassment, abuse, violence or threat, by sharing their stories. The trend apparently finds its inception in America when actor Alyssa Milano recommended women to "give people a sense of the magnitude of the problem", following the controversies surrounding defamed Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein. It has successively led to trends like #ididittoo, where men confessed to have committed assault on women, and #HowIWillChange, which hopes to encourage men to tackle the culture.
