Kavita's on a song

Post Ikatara from Wake Up Sid, singer-composer Kavita Seth's life has changed drastically. The lady has become a lot busier, travelling across India and abroad for concerts, and is getting a lot of work. Kavita, who is all set to perform at a folk festival that starts today in Jodhpur, talks to CS about what's new in her life:

Who: Kavita Seth
What: Talks about performing at concerts in India and abroad
Where: Her residence

Staying rooted
I am really excited about this event, as it will have artists from all over the globe. Sufi and folk music are two forms that are very close to my heart. I love jamming with international folk artists from places like Afghanistan and Iran. The music of these two nations is very rooted and comes straight from the heart. I will be using instruments like acoustic guitar, harmonium and flute with my Sufi and Rajasthani folk songs. It's a wonderful platform for all of us.u00a0

Concert queen
Nowadays, I get a lot of offers for concerts, and love that experience. Travelling is my passion and concerts give me a fabulous opportunity to explore India and abroad. Recently, I went to Jehanabad, a small town near Patna in Bihar. A Sufi Mahotsav was organised there to commemorate the world's first lady Sufi saint, Biwi Kamal. Jehanabad is known for its Maoist violence, but I was surprised to see a crowd of 5,000 at the concert. Bihar's CM Nitish Kumar who was also present congratulated me at the end of the show. It was really kind of him.

Keeping busy
I am very glad to have got the opportunity to compose the song Intezar for an upcoming film. Sanjay Leela Bhansali really liked the tune. It means a lot to me that he liked my song, as SLB has a fabulous sense of music. I have also sung three songs for Michael Winterbottom's film Trishna that stars Freida Pinto. For me, the first pre-requisite for any song is poetry. I just can't sing songs with bad lyrics.

Son shine
I have two sons, Kavish and Kanishk and both sing very well. The elder one is doing third year engineering from IIT, Bombay and the younger one is in his tenth standard. Though I might sound too doting, Kavish is a gifted composer as well. While I grew up listening to Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Abida Parveen, my sons love different genres. They have introduced me to Latin American music, hip-hop, rap and other styles. Nowadays, I enjoy listening to Bryan Adams, Enrique Iglesias, Elton John, George Michael and yes, Eminem (laughs out loud).
