Kenyans Oloitiptip, Cherono win World 10K marathon in Bangalore

Alex Oloitiptip and Gladys Cherono from Kenya triumphed in men's and women's titles of the Tata Consultancy World 10K Bangalore, which ended at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium yesterday.

Among Indians, Suresh K Patel and Sudha Singh topped in the men and women’s group but overall they finished 20th and 14th respectively.u00a0

Patel clocked 30.34 and V L Dangi in 30.53 and Mohd Yunus in 30.58 followed him. Sudha Singh completed a start- to-finish effort in 35.25, while Preeja Sreedharan, making a comeback, took second place in 36.01. OP Jaisha was just behind her in 36.31.

Defending champion Monika Athare finished fourth. Oloitiptip may not have been the favourite, but he took pole position early in the race and maintained it till the end. He eventually got over the line in 28.07 minutes.

Kipkemboi in 28.12 and Legese in 28.16 came second and third respectively. Japhet Korir, who is the current World Cross Country champion failed to live up to expectations, finishing 17th.

Fantastic win
Oloitiptip was over the moon with his win. “It was fantastic win for me. I had faith in my ability and believed that I could win the run. The first five kilometers were difficult and the conditions were humid, but the fact that I was strong and well prepared in mind and body helped me do well,” Oloitiptip said.

Gladys Cherono conquered the women’s race, winning in 32.03 minutes, five seconds shy of the course record of 31.58 set by Yimer Wude in 2010. She elaborated on her win: “The run was my first in India and I am glad with my performance. The weather was humid, which made running a little challenging personally,” said Gladys.u00a0
