Kerala: Nun found dead in well

Idukki: A 36-year-old nun was today found dead in a well near her convent in Kerala's Idukki district, with preliminary information suggesting that it was a case of suicide.

The nun, Elsa Maria, was suffering from depression earlier, police said, adding it is suspected that she had committed suicide last night at her Ullupponi convent. Preliminary information is that it is a case of suicide, Idukki police told PTI. The body has been sent to Kottayam Medical College for post-mortem.

In September this year, a 69-year-old nun of a convent at Pala in Kottayam district was found murdered in her room. One person was arrested in connection with the murder. In 1992, the body of 19-year-old Catholic Nun, sister Abhaya, was found in the well of St Pius X convent at Kottayam.

Though crime branch had initially concluded it as a case of suicide, on a plea by her parents, CBI took over the investigation. The CBI concluded that Abhaya had been murdered, but they sought closure of the case due to lack of evidence, which was turned down by a CBI court in Kochi.

In 2008, two priests-- father Jose Putarika, Father Thomas Kottor, and sister Seffi, were arrested by CBI and in July 2009, charges of murder, destruction of evidence, and defamation were filed against them.

CBI had found that Abhaya had been hacked to death with an axe by the two priests and the nun.
