PMC, which has set aside Rs 175 cr for it, expects the project to be finished by December 2014
To tackle the water supply crisis that tags along with the summers, Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is constructing a 2,500 mm (2.5-metre diameter) pipeline to lift water from the Khadakwasla dam. Previously in the year 2000, the civic body had constructed its first water-lifting line of 3,000 mm (3-metre diameter) from the dam to Parvati Water Purification Station. Work on the new line has already begun with an eye on the demand of 1,125 MLD (million litres a day) of water for citizens.

Nandakishor Jagtap, executive engineer, Swargate water supply, said, “As a matter of priority, a sizable amount of Rs 175 crore has been set aside for the work in the PMC budget for the financial year 2013-14. Actual work on constructing the water-lifting line from Khadakwasla dam has started a few days ago. This will save us 30 per cent of the current cost of lifting water.”
“We are targeting the laying down of the 2,500 mm water-lifting pipeline work to finish by December 2014. This will automatically ease out many technical problems related to water-lifting from Khadakwasla dam,” said VG Kulkarni, superintending engineer, water supply, PMC.
Prasad Unde, executive engineer, electricity department, PMC, said, “We are forming an estimate on the amount of electricity required for the project and are getting supply from a nearby power station. Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) has made an assessment of Rs 15 crore as expenditure for electricity on the entire project and power will be lifted from Nanded City electricity transformers off Sinhagad Road.”
The irrigation department is naturally appreciative of the project.
“This is a wise decision taken by PMC. Instead of lifting water from the dam canal, the civic body will directly take it from Khadakwasla dam and the quality would be better too. We hope that the new water-lifting pipeline will suffice in meeting the requirements of the city,” said Bharat Thorat, deputy engineer, irrigation department, Pune.
