Hosts Kolkata Knight Riders put up a sterling performance to send champions Chennai Super Kings packing at the Eden Gardens on Saturday.

KKR overcame their southern rivals by 10 runs via the Duckworth-Lewis method in a rain-hit game. Kolkata were 61-2 in 10 overs in response to Chennai's paltry score of 114-4 in 20 overs when rain ensured no further play. South African Jacques Kallis (21) and Manoj Tiwary (15) were the two unbeaten batsmen when play was called off.

Earlier, Aussie paceman Brett Lee and left-arm spinner Iqbal Abdulla helped restrict Chennai to 114 as S Badrinath scored a half century for the visitors. "It is a very important win for us. We are still one game away from reaching the top four and the entire credit goes to the bowling department," said KKR skipper Gautam Gambhir. Though he didn't get a wicket, Lee conceded just eight runs in his four overs while spinner Iqbal Abdulla took the wicket of M Vijay in his four overs, giving away 15 runs. "We didn't have enough runs on the board. We needed to take wickets but that did not happen,' said Chennai coach Stephen Fleming. "It was one of those days when we struggled. A couple of wickets could have made the difference. We could have been a little more proactive." Gambhir heaped plenty of praise on Lee. "He is one of the best fast bowlers in the world. This is what champions are made up of. I think a lot of young guys can learn from Brett's commitment and the way he bowled today on a wicket which helped spinners," said the skipper.
