Fraudsters collected up to Rs 3 lakh from clerical post applicants after promising to fill in answer sheets in exam

Central Crime Branch sleuths nabbed the economics lecturer of a government PU college in Hosanagar, Shimoga district along with a retired clerk for duping Karnataka Public Service Commission (KPSCA) aspirants after promising to get them clerical posts.

Sheikh Abdul Karim (51) and his associate Nagendra Rao (68) were nabbed from a hotel on Race Course road near the KPSC office. The police confiscated blank answer scripts supplied by KPSC and Rs 20,000 in cash from the duo.

Assistant Commissioner of Police S H Duggappa said that Karim was trying to make a quick buck and he and Rao used to contact unemployed youth who were aspiring to apply for clerical posts through KPSC.

Entrapped!
He assured them of maximum marks in the exams and extracted lakhs of rupees after flaunting his contacts in the KPSC office. The victims were advised to attend exams and leave the answer scripts blank, following which their answer scripts would be filled with the appropriate answers by the accused and submitted back to KPSC.
Foe his so-called services, Karim would charge two to three lakh.

The scam came to light when one of the candidate who was approached by the duo, tipped the police.
"We are investigating whether the duo have actually have any links with the staff of the KPSC," Duggappa said.
