Siddhesh Lad got the news of his selection in the playing XI of the Mumbai Ranji Trophy team in an unexpected way yesterday.
The 19-year-old was on his way to Varanasi by Kashi Express for the All-India Rohinton Baria Trophy when he got his maiden call-up. Excited by the news, Siddhesh immediately got down at the next station to join his teammates in Indore for the quarter-final match against Madhya Pradesh on January 2.
"He had no clue of what he was doing. The place was completely new to him. He got down at Khandva (in Madhya Pradesh) and took a bus to Indore, which is about four hours away. It was absolutely crazy," Siddhesh's father, Dinesh told MiD DAY.
Lad, who is the coach of India star Rohit Sharma, is hopeful of his son making his debut in the quarters. "Abhishek Nayar is unlikely to play the next the match and that is why he (Siddhesh) got a look in. Let's hope he makes his debut now," he said.
