As Mumbai battles flooded roads and traffic jams on account of the heavy rainfall this week, the monsoon has also contributed to the water levels of the lakes. While the city is currently facing a 10 per cent water cut due to poor rainfall in the month of June, heavy rains have prompted BMC to schedule a decision on July 15 about the water cut.

Rainfall has not been plentiful in the lakes this year, as compared to last year till July 4. This year, Tulsi lake had a maximum of 635 mm of rainfall, while the minimum was 237 mm at Upper Vaitarna. Last year, however, the scenario was quite different, with 810 mm of rainfall at Tulsi lake, and 222 mm at Modak Sagar till July 4.
Still, water levels have considerably increased in the last week. “11,000 million litres of water has been collected in the six lakes due to heavy precipitation since Monday. Monday’s reports of the lakes had shown that water levels in Modak Sagar and Upper Vaitarna dams have risen, but the useful stock in Upper Vaitarna still remains at zero,” said an official from the hydraulics department. The two lakes account for 29 per cent of water supply to the city.
Additional municipal commissioner (water supply), Rajiv Jalota said, “Although it rained heavily on Monday night in the catchment areas, it wasn’t so good on Tuesday night. It has been raining heavily since Wednesday afternoon, and we will decide about the water cut on July 15. Till then, the 10 per cent water cut will prevail.”
The rainfall around lakes has been increasing every day. On the morning of July 4, heavy rainfall was witnessed at Vihar (85 mm) and Tulsi (65 mm) lakes.

For the next 48 hours, intermittent rain or showers will occur in parts of the city and suburbs. One or two spells may be heavy. Maximum and minimum temperatures will be around 27 and 23°C respectively.u00a0
