Lean and mean

Supermodel and actor Mohsin Akhtar will soon flaunt his lean toned body in his upcoming film It's A Man's World. But there was a time when this hunk weighed a good 98 kgs. "Back home in Kashmir, I looked like a healthy body builder. But once I started modelling in Delhi, I realised that the big screen actually magnifies your body. Thereafter, I toned my body considerably," says Mohsin. CS chatted with him about his fitness routine:

On the run
Running is important if done in moderation. It leads to fat loss around the love handles and other body parts. One should focus on exercises which are controlled with the back movement. Cross trainer and cycling sessions can be merged with some weight training. I feel that sprinting tires you quickly, and so it's better to go for brisk walks on the treadmill. Ideally, weight workouts should follow a cardio session. Your mind will give you signs of being mentally exhausted if you start with weights first. I am a hardcore fitness enthusiast, but curtail my gym rounds to a minimum of four times a week. I opt for at least 25 minutes of cardio workouts.

Weighty issue
Post the cardio workout, I pump some weights and focus on abs and crunches. My entire workout stretches to a maximum of 90 minutes. Exercise should be done at a stretch and socialising with gym buddies should be done after the workout. A small breather between exercises is fine. A longer break cools down your body, which is not healthy for weight loss. I feel that if a person is changing his/her set of exercises, it has to be continuous with frequent repetitions (15-20). Vigorous workouts, spanning two hours and above, don't give you desired results.u00a0

My diet
Hailing from Kashmir, I had to change my dietary habits considerably. I now opt for a healthy breakfast. I have switched from being a rice eater to a multi-grain eater. I have replaced non-vegetarian food with dals. I have also developed a taste for vegetarian cuisine. Dinner time is mainly grilled or tandoori chicken with no carbohydrates at all.
