Left in the lurch

A night of tragedy has turned into a lifetime of woes for many residents of Lalita Park. Taking no chances, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has evacuated residents of a building next to the site of the catastrophe.

Homeless: Many residents of Lalita Park are forced to live out in the open.

The sealed building too is owned by Amritpal Singh Sachdeva, the main accused in the Monday night tragedy.
The families have moved out, but they have nowhere to go. Many have shifted to parks and community halls and are paying out of their own pockets for survival.

"We are being treated like animals. The government has taken no initiatives to help us. When we find shelter in a park, policemen throw us out. Some locals helped us get into a community hall," said Pinky Sharma.
u00a0"I have been wearing the same clothes for the past four days because they don't allow us to collect our personal belongings," said Ramniwas (name changed on request), another victim.
