Leopard kills 10-yr-old at Aarey colony

While the Aarey colony residents are still reeling from the recent attacks by big cats and civic authorities’ promises of proper sanitation facilities, a 10-year-old lost his life in a leopard attack on Saturday evening when he had gone to answer nature’s call in the nearby bushes at Adarsh Nagar in Aarey colony.

“Around 5.30 pm, Saurav Thakur Yadav and Arihant Yadav had gone to answer nature’s call near their village. Suddenly, a leopard appeared from the bushes and dragged Saurav away,” said a police official from Aarey police station. “Arihant got scared and ran to his home to alert his parents, who along with other villagers went in search of Saurav,” he added. They found the boy lying in a pool of blood around 800 metres away from Adarsh Nagar. The child was declared dead by the time the villagers could take him to the Bhagwati Hospital.

“The incident that took place on Saturday evening is really unfortunate. Once again a person sitting to answer nature’s call has been attacked. I would once again like to appeal to the people staying the Aarey colony that they should not go to the forest area and bushes after sundown until sunrise. The leopard attacks a person sitting in crouching position, mistakenly thinking that it’s a small animal or its prey,” said Wildlife Expert Krishna Tiwari.

“The incident that took place at Adarsh Nagar is regrettable. We have already installed a camouflaged cage to trap the leopard where the body of the deceased was found. Our team and SGNP team is also patrolling the area in the night.” Range Forest Officer Anil Todarmal from Thane Forest Department said.

Meanwhile, a leopard walked into the cage set by Thane forest department at Khambyachapada, where a woman was attacked earlier this month, Between 4.30 am and 5 am on Saturday. “The forest department came to take it to their rescue centre. However, the trapped animal wasn’t an adult,” said a local villager.

Third attack in a month
On January 1, 18-year-old Vinod Ramji Hadal, a resident of Maroshipada was attacked by a leopard when he was answering nature’s call
On January 6, Savita Warte from Khambyachapada sustained injuries in a leopard attack
