City cops say it's easier to track lost objects and the thief with the help of the mobile's IMEI number.




According to police, it's easier to track the lost objects through International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI)u00a0u00a0 number of the mobile phone.

Besides, in case of valuables being stolen, the thief wouldu00a0 either try to sell or use the mobile phone after some days. This would help the police to track down the culprit through the IMEI number.

In the case of the gold jewels, the Upparpeth police successfully tracked down the bag containing the same to a newspaper girl.

Vinay and Shailaja had lost the bag while returning home in an auto rickshaw.

On reaching their destination, they realised that the bag was missing and thought that it might have fallen down during the tumultuous ride.

They registered a complaint at the Rajajinagar police, which was transferred to Upparpeth.

Finders keepers

Investigations revealed that a newspaper vendor Soumya (18), had accidentally found the bag on the road and taken it home. She had planned to return the bag if anybody asked about it.

Nevertheless, out of curiosity Soumya opened the bag and was surprised to find it was full of gold ornaments. Along with the ornaments she also found a mobile phone that had been switched off.

After a few days, Soumya gave the mobile phone to her brother who started using it. With the help of the IMEI number, the police were able to track him immediately.

On interrogation, Soumya revealed how the bag had come into her possession and returned the ornaments to their rightful owner.

For her honesty, the police suggested that Soumya be given a sum of Rs 5,000 as reward.

Lokeshwar, PI ofu00a0 Upparpeth, said, "We are suggesting that people should keep their mobile phone in their bags so that we can track down such cases."

What's IMEI Number?

It's a 15-digit number unique to a mobile handset.u00a0 When a phone is switched on, the IMEI number is transmitted and checked against a database in the network's Equipment Identity Register (EIR). An operator can thus track or block the handset.
