Lights, camera, heist action

Latest reports indicate that the four Mexican nationals arrested from the Dubai airport after their diamond robbery from the India International Jewellery Show at the NSE ground in Goregaon, Mumbai, are back in the city. The gang of four was arrested for whisking off diamond jewellery worth approximately Rs 6 crore.

Mexican nationals Elvia Grissel Guerrero Lugo (24), Mauricio Gonzalez Maldonado (24), Elias Campos Molan (39) and Orlando Gutierez of Venezuela are said to have walked out of a jewellery show on Tuesday evening with diamonds weighing 887 carats. The diamonds belonged to an Israeli company, Dalumi Group. Some more details filtering in after the two-day drama indicate that the suspects had swallowed the stones to make off with them.

With filmmakers taking on bold, new subjects, this diamond robbery is, surely, the stuff of a dream script and it even has that entirely stirring message in the end ufffd crime does not pay ufffd since the Mumbai police nabbed the suspects so quickly.

With young Indian, urbane filmmakers treading paths less travelled, this real-life occurrence could be a great plot for a film, embellished of course with some creative licence. The nature of the heist and Dubai chase would make for a taut, slick film if handled cleverly.

One could also weave in the Israel angle with some deftness. A quick Internet check says that Israel is giving India fierce competition in the diamond market, especially in Brussels. That could be the background. Was Israel's Mossad (a long shot but cinematic licence should be allowed) involved in the chase to nab the thieves?
It would also be fascinating to learn how this was plotted. It surely must have entailed detailed planning as the diamonds were slipped away in an exhibition chock-a-block with people and security. This was not a spontaneous, knee jerk robbery. Their flight path too makes one think that they had their getaway planned.

There have been several memorable English movies on robberies and now this one will be perfect for aspiring filmmakers to take off from, may just be perfect. Some time ago, a film called Being Cyrus, with its funny moments but darkness at its core and a Roald Dahl-esque twist at the end, redefined contemporary crime thrillers.

One thinks this diamond robbery could be the stuff of something like that. For Mumbai aspirants, the inspiration for au00a0 fast-paced and edgy film lies in their backyard.
