Starting the day off with a breakfast that includes foods with a low glycemic index could be all it takes to avoid the 3pm munchies and unnecessary empty calories

At a wellness conference hosted by the Institute of Food Technologists last week in Chicago, researchers from Purdue University said that when participants in their study added almonds to their breakfast, they reported feeling fuller longer and avoided the pitfalls of soaring blood sugar levels that are followed by a crashing low.

Here are some breakfast foods that fall on the low side of the glycemic index:

Yogurt - low-fat
Grapefruit
Milk
Soya milk
Dried apricots
Rye
Tomatoes
Apple juice
All-Bran cereal
Oranges
Peaches
Porridge
Orange Juice
Kiwi
Bananas
Pearl barley
Whole grain bread
