Thet are young and they certainly know how to have fun.

Meet Rehan Bhat (piano), Shai Divan (vocal), Vikramaditya Dugar (saxophone), Yaashree Himatsingka (vocal), Parina Kothari (vocal), Armaan Nazir (bass) and Zahan Parekh (drums). These musicians, aged between 16 and 18 years, from The Cathedral and John Connon School, have been performing together for the last four years, for different non-profit organisations — Songbound, Salaam Bombay and The Welfare of Stray Dogs. Tomorrow, they will perform their first gig at the NCPA for an event titled A Swing at Jazz.

"This is a great opportunity for them, and for the first time that people will come to watch a show knowing that these youngsters are the only performers. Before this, they've done a few concerts but not on this scale," says musician Yohan Marshall, who has been mentoring them for the last two years. Marshall has been a music teacher at the True School of Music, and now teaches ensembles; he met the sextet at one of their gigs. "They are young and influenced by jazz music. They have a vast repertoire that covers different styles, including modern jazz," he says.

The group recently tied up with IndianRaga — the US-based arts education set-up best known for their cover of Ed Sheeran's Shape of You — for their Mumbai Raga Labs' launch video. In it, they recreated a jazz cover of Alan Walker's Faded. "They wanted the kids to do an original rendition of a pop song, which turned out beautifully. Seeing this, NCPA approached us and told us about a new property where they are trying to promote young talent," he says.

At the concert, the young artistes will perform everything from jazz standards like Autumn Leave and Sway to instrumental tunes. "We have tried to create variety to showcase their skills. There will also be old school instrumental tunes and jazz-influenced versions of pop songs. They listen to pop music, so it's nice to blend the two styles," he adds.
