What according to you defines Trance music?
I don’t know — I suck at genres. Trance, whatever it is today, is emotional, has big, lush, layered synths and big breakdowns and even bigger build-ups.

You are one of the most sought after acts, globally — which destination is your favourite and why?
I’ve played a lot in the US and I like many cities there, but Seattle and San Francisco pop in my mind first. Both markets have been great for me, and I have become friends in both cities as well. Since I live in the US most of the year, I have to say that right now my favourite destination is my home country Finland, because I miss home, I don’t get to be there enough these days.

How did you get the name ‘Darude’?
When I was studying my first year in Turku Polytechnic we had a party at my classmate’s apartment. We were eating and drinking and playing records and I guess I was feeling really, “happy” as I played one favourite track of mine of that time, ‘Rudeboys’ by Leila K, several times in a row. In short, it’s because of that my friends started kind of mockingly calling me 'Rudeboy'. I started using that as a nickname online and as my artist name when I started making music. Later on, it got shortened to ‘da Rude’ (I didn’t wanna be a ‘boy’ which was then put together by the graphic artist when the single cover for my first single ‘Sandstorm’ was made; it looked visually better like that so... ‘Darude’.

With Sandstorm, you put Finland on the world music map; does that make you feel proud?
Of course. I call it all a big, happy accident, though, because I had no idea something like that could happen; I was just a hobbyist and wasn’t even dreaming of the success I later have had.

What plans do you have to make Mumbai groove to your music?
The same I always do, I’ll play great music, new and classics, my own and my remixes and I’ll be grinning ear to ear and interacting with the crowd, having fun!

What’s next for you after you “storm” Mumbai on NYE?
I’ll head back to the US and have got gigs lined up there, most notably the amazing Groove Cruise in the end of January. I’m also working on my new album; hopefully you’ll hear official news of that soon! (But you’ll hear sneak peeks in my set alreadyu00a0on NYE.)u00a0
