Merseyside club suffer embarrassing 1-3 defeat Hull City
Hull put a dent in Liverpool’s Premier League title ambitions with a shock 3-1 win over the Merseysiders at the KC Stadium yesterday on what started out as a torrid day for the Tigers.u00a0Liverpool kicked-off in second place but this result dropped them to third on goal difference behind Chelsea ahead of the west London side’s match at home to Southampton later in the day.

Both Chelsea and Liverpool were seven points adrift of leaders Arsenal.u00a0Hull took a 20th minute lead when Jake Livermore, on loan from Tottenham Hotspur, scored his first Premier League goal as a 25-yard shot deflected off Martin Skrtel and went over the head of Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet.
But Liverpool were level seven minutes later when England captain Steven Gerrad swept in a 20-yard free-kick.
However Hull — who started the match 10 points adrift of Liverpool — put the result beyond doubt with two goals inside the final 20 minutes.u00a0David Meyler made it 2-1 in the 72nd minute after Kolo Toure failed to clear a ball into the Liverpool box and, three minutes from time, Tom Huddlestone’s left-footed chip was turned into his own net by Skrtel.
The victory united, at least temporarily, Hull owner Assem Allam and those fans of the club unhappy at his intention to change its official name from Hull City AFC to Hull Tigers.u00a0Earlier, champions Manchester United needed two goals from Wayne Rooney to help them twice come from behind in a 2-2 draw away to Tottenham Hotspur.u00a0Spurs went ahead through a Kyle Walker free-kick and then made it 2-1 thanks to a stunning strike from Sandro.
Rooney to the rescue
But Rooney hit back on both occasions as David Moyes’s men left White Hart Lane with a point.u00a0But having also drawn 2-2 at Cardiff City last weekend, this was another missed opportunity for United, who are now nine points behind Arsenal.
Man City, Chelsea win
Both Chelsea and Manchester City capitalised on Liverpool’s shock defeat by Hull yesterday to leapfrog the Merseysiders and close the gap on Premier League leaders Arsenal.u00a0Chelsea recovered from conceding a goal inside the first minute at Stamford Bridge, when Jay Rodriguez pounced on a poor backpass from Michael Essien, to beat high-flyers Southampton 3-1.
Second-half goals from central defenders Gary Cahill and John Terry, on his 400th league appearance, put Chelsea in front before substitute Demba Ba sealed victory with a 90th minute effort.
The win took Chelsea, now in second place, to within four points of Arsenal while City, who went third, were six points adrift of the leaders after another impressive home display saw Swansea beaten 3-0.u00a0Samir Nasri scored twice after Alvaro Negredo broke the deadlock in just the eighth minute at Eastlands.u00a0
