Civic officials join hands with community radio station Jago Mumbai to spread awareness about malaria and provide preventive measures this monsoon

Civic officials at Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) have decided to intensify their malaria awareness programme and have roped in help from the airwaves in the city.

This monsoon, in order to avoid malaria cases in the city, officials will spread the message on community radios.

Officials have joined hands with a community radio station Jago Mumbai, which play on the frequency of 90.8 MHtz, operating in the H-West ward.

A BMC officer said, "The radio station will be given a plan of action on how to incorporate our campaign into their programming. Radio members met up with H-West ward officials and plans have been drawn up."

The official also added that the radio station will interview BMC officers and provide important tips on how to avoid the deadly disease.

Additional Municipal Commissioner (Health) Manisha Mhaiskar said, "We have approached several community radio centres in the city.

Such initiatives will also be carried out in the D and T-ward (South Mumbai and Mulund) as part of a citizen initiative. The information on how to prevent malaria will be based on our five-point charter."

In the past, Jago Mumbai, a community radio formed by the Union Park Residents Association (UPRA), has carried out a series of informative campaign last year to educate listeners about the outbreak of malaria.

Bharatu Kakkad, secretary of UPRA said, "We will be airing a lot of interviews of BMC officials and doctors on the prevention as well as curative measures. Although the plan of action is not ready tit-bits of information on the disease will be disseminated."

She further added that they would host interactive sessions wherein listeners could inform them about places where there was a rise in malaria cases or accumulation of stagnant water.

The radio can be heard clearly in Mahim, Bandra, Khar, Juhu, Vile Parle, Andheri-Lokhandwala as well as parts of Chembur, Sion, Mulund, Thane and Matunga.
