Two weeks after the nurses at the Asian Heart Institute went on strike to demand that their qualification certificates be returned, 200 nursing students of Grant Medical college went on a hunger strike on November 3, after 32 out of a batch of 52 third year students failed their examinations.
The BSc Nursing students demanded that their papers be re-examined, and alleged that they received less marks in two practical examinations after complaining about certain faculty members last year.
They staged the day-long hunger strike at Azad Maidan.
The results of the exam were declared in August, following which 32 students asked for a re-evaluation from the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences. However, their pleas went unheard. "We had to resort to a hunger strike as we have tried all other ways to get our marks rectified. How is it possible that all 32 students get only 6 or 7 marks out of 50? The examiner must have had a personal grudge," claimed a student.
Students were awarded less marks in two subjects, Pediatrics and Psychiatric nursing. An internal examiner was present at those exams.
"We were told that an inquiry will be conducted by October 31, but we are still awaiting a reply from MUHS," said another student.
Vice Chancellor of MUHS Dr Arun Jamkar said, "We have already acted upon the complaint and sent an examination board team to meet the students and faculty members. The report has been prepared by the team, and will be submitted to the board of examination, which will take the final call."
"Only two students have failed in three subjects after the re-evaluation, while others have been given an ATKT (Allowed to Keep Term) status," he added.
