Would a good meal amidst a dull ambience appeal to you? If you feel that food is the only thing that makes an eatery work, then think twice before checking out F5, the three-month-old cafe at Basavangudi. The moment you step into this terrace-turned cafe, you will understand the thought behind it.

Since it's surrounded by colleges, F5 has decked itself up in a way that can lure students to give the lectures a miss.

Chocolate shot

With spray paintings on walls, low tables and bean bags strewn around, it resembles a typical college common room in Bollywood movies. The bamboo fence and partitions lend the place a cozy look making it perfect for dating couples.

However, if you are a hard core carnivore, then F5 may disappoint you in theu00a0 multi-cuisine section offering dishes like pasta and pakoda. The menu is strictly vegetarian and herbivores written in capital on the kitchen wall signifies that F5 is dead serious about serving food that is even devoid of egg.

And since pastries, which form a huge chunk of the dessert menu, mostly contain egg, the cafe doesn't have any dessert menu. But it was a rainy evening and being drenched completely, the warm and vibrant F5 did more than uplift our mood and we decided to keep aside craving for non-vegetarian snacks for the evening.

Matka Chai (Rs 39) and Hot Chocolate (Rs 49) were obvious choices for the evening and thankfully we were not disappointed. With ginger, clove and cardamom, the steamy hot tea served in earthen matkas was the kind that you would ideally prefer sipping on a lazy and cold day.

However, the hot chocolate was most ordinary, tasting like the regular powdery chocolate milk drink. We were advised to pair these beverages with Mushroom 65 (Rs 79) and Cottage Cheese Finger (Rs 69). The Mushroom 65 turned out to be spicy and tangy, teasing our taste buds. The Cottage Cheese Finger with thick batter was a tad salt less.

Still hungry, we ordered for a Spicy Pool Pizza (Rs 139) since were told the base is made fresh. But it ended up being the biggest disappointment of the evening. Too rusty, the flour base thick pizza with bell pepper, corn and cheese topping was anything but spicy.

In fact, the topping had a confused flavour. We were about to put an end to our gastronomical journey when we heard the mention of Caramel and Chocolate shots. Both priced at Rs 49, the shots made up for every thing that we were not happy with. Served in shot glasses, you can try both either at room temperature or piping hot. Following suggestions, we opted for hot chocolate and caramel shots.

The latter reminded us of molten eclairs with the right flavour of caramelised sugar that melted in our mouths. The hot liquid chocolate garnished with bits of solid chocolate is a sheer delight for cocoa fans.

With a new eatery opening every day, F5 may not be on top of the list of must-visit restaurants, speaking strictly on the basis of its food. But if you suddenly have the urge of revisiting your college common rooms, then dropping by at F5 one evening may not be a bad idea.
