Apostolic Carmel (Bandra) goalkeeper Jhanvi Shinde came to Azad Maidan leaving her school’s farewell party midway to play the Bengal Club Sports Academy organised girls’ U-16 inter-school Swami Vivekananda and Sister Nivedita Memorial Trophy final yesterday.

Her sacrifice paid off as the 15-year-old effected three crucial saves against Dhirubhai Ambani High School (BKC) and ensured her team held on to the slim 1-0 lead when the final whistle was blown. Joanna Jenson scored the all-important goal.

In the first half, the BKC school dominated proceedings. Dhirubhai Ambani’s Suhana Khan (Shah Rukh Khan’s daughter) saw a shot saved by Jhanvi. She then saved two penalties before Joanna scored in the second half.

“This was my last match for the school. We finished third in the MSSA tournament. Winning a gold was something that I missed throughout the year. Finally, my dream has been fulfilled on our farewell day. I was clad in a saree when my football coach (Cosmos Vaz) asked me if I would want to play in the final. “There was no second thought and I changed into my football gear and rushed to Azad Maidan.
“What a day it has been. The win was doubly special as I was adjudged the best player of the tournament and the best goalkeeper,” said the Class X student.
Joanna walked away with the ‘Golden Boot’ award. The Bandra school won a cash award of Rs 10,000, while Dhirubhai Ambani got Rs 5,000. Meanwhile in the boys’ U-16 final, St Lawrence (Kandivli) beat Antonio D’Souza High School (ANZA; Byculla) 4-3 via tie-breaker to clinch the JC Maitra and JC Bhattacharjee Memorial Trophy. Both teams were tied 0-0 at the end of regulation time.
The ‘Golden Boot’ award in the boys category was bagged by Kamran Ansari (ANZA) and the ‘Best player of the tournament’ was won by Harsh Rall of St Lawrence.
