Pune's cultural heritage revisited

Pune

Food hunts, cycle rallies and a series of dedicated walks are just some of the 40 activities that Punekars can participate at the upcoming Virasat Pune Heritage Festival, starting from April 13.

Currently in its third year, the festival is an eight-day celebration of the city’s architecture, culture and heritage and will take Punekars through the World Heritage Day that falls on April 18.

Prajakta Panshikar, consultant, Heritage Department of Janwani, the organisers of the show, says, “We started the show in 2012 with the aim to increase awareness about Pune’s heritage buildings among Punekars. Every year, we come up with innovative approaches to attract youngsters to this activity, like holding a cycle rally, a city food hunt, interesting campus walks, etc. Almost all the activities are free of cost so that more people can get involved in it.”

Several events in the festival are organised through crowdfunding, and will offer an exciting line-up of activities to introduce Punekars to the city’s culture and legacy, and at the same time generate public opinion towards the need for heritage conservation. “We believe that heritage is integral to urban development and we all bear the responsibility of transferring this legacy to our future generations,” concludes Panshikar.

The Virasat Pune Heritage Festival 2014 will include cycle rides, heritage walks and cultural performances
