Mumbai: Railway employee tries to end life with country-made handgun

A Western Railway gangman allegedly tried to kill himself yesterday in his Bandra residence by shooting himself with a country-made pistol. Locals informed the Khar police after knowing of the incident which happened in the afternoon yesterday. Police registered an attempt to suicide case.

The accused Mohammedali Sheikh is a gangman at Grant Road. Police said the man was in his Bandra (West) residence on Thursday afternoon at around 1 pm.

His mother was in the kitchen when she heard a round being fired. When she came out, she found that the bullet had brushed Sheikh’s chest. He was immediately taken to Bhabha Hospital, and later shifted to KEM Hospital. He is currently stable.

‘By mistake’
In his initial statement to the police, the employee has said that he had found the pistol on his building terrace, below the water tank. He told them that he had brought the pistol home and was simply looking at the pistol when it accidentally fired.

However, Khar police officials investigating the case do not believe this story. Sources said it is an attempt to suicide, since Sheikh was depressed due to many reasons first, the lack of children in his many years of marriage and second, his constant requirement to be under medication for high blood pressure and diabetes.

Police have registered a case under Section 309 (attempt to commit suicide) and other relevant sections of the Arms Act. “He will be arrested in any case, as he has been booked for attempting suicide and under Arms Act.

If it is established that he didn’t try to kill himself, he will be arrested because it was his responsibility to report a pistol that he says he found,” said a police officer from Khar police station.

The police are now investigating where Sheikh might have procured the pistol from, or who might have kept the weapon on the terrace.
