First merit list for junior college admissions released online

The first online junior college admission merit list was released on Wednesday evening and just like principals had predicted, the overall cut-offs for Commerce and Arts stream went up by 1-2% in most colleges. Surprisingly, the cut-off for Science in some of the major colleges including Jai Hind, KC, Ruia and Ruparel colleges has dipped by a 1-2% compared to 2013 admissions.

Ashok Wadia, Principal, Jai Hind college said, “Earlier the drop in percentage for admissions was seen only in degree college but now even junior colleges witness it which is due to change in trend. These days the attitude of parents and students towards the field of science has changed completely and they prefer switching to fields which give them fast results like commerce or other management courses. Parents and students no longer look up to science stream as a lucrative option for career and hence the drop in percentages is observed. It is very necessary to promote science field as a lucrative career option among people to keep our scientific heritage alive.”

A total of 1,76,876 students were allotted seats in the first round and while most students were happy with the allotment, some had a tough day as they could not see their names on the college lists. “I received an SMS from the website stating that I’ve been allotted a seat but my name doesn’t show on the list put up at the college. I don’t know what to do. Will have to check with the department,” said Sunil More, one of the students outside K C College, Churchgate.

Students whose names have appeared in the list on Wendesday can confirm their admissions, by submitting all required documents and paying Rs 50, till Saturday. The second merit list will be released on July 9 at 5 pm.
