Monsoon

Monsoon comes as a welcome break from the sultry summer weather, but while the rains refresh, the season is also known to be conducive to the spread of diseases that can be detrimental to your health. Conditions like food poisoning, cold, cough, flu, poor digestion, jaundice, and typhoid, etc, are known to target people during rains. The guide gives you expert advise for a healthier monsoon.

Dr Kapil Patwardhan, general practitioner, Sahyadri Hospital, points out, “Different types of diseases are seen prevailing in the city during the monsoon. One of the most important precautions that people should take is to avoid eating outside food. Also, skin problems are highly reported during this season. To avoid this, keep your feet as well as other body parts dry so that you are protected from skin diseases.”

Another noticeable problem is in digestion. During the monsoon season, the digestion process for most people becomes slow, so one is advised to eat moderately and only when hungry. “People should eat small portions during the monsoon season; they should always eat hot and well-cooked food. Boiled water should be left to cool and then consumed. If you’re using a purifier, clean it before this season and then use it,” says dietician Malavika Karkare She adds that eating seasonal fruits and avoiding leafy vegetables is a must as is eating well-cooked food.

For all those who like getting wet in the rain and enjoying the showers, Dr Patwardhan has a suggestion. “Once you get wet in the rain, have a hot water bath and clean the whole body properly. One must use mosquito repellent or any other cream so that they protect themselves from mosquitoes as the chances of malaria increase in this season. Get rid of stagnant water near the house, time and again, so that germs don’t collect there and the spread of diseases is controlled.”
