The Mumbai Metro has proved to be a time saver for many Mumbaikars and now the city’s newest mode of commute is helping save trees.

When this diarist went to get a smart card recharge rather than get a receipt for the top up, the counter operator showed a screen that virtually displayed the smart card purse. Surprised, that the Mumbai Metro which gave receipts for coupons was not giving one for a top up, when we asked why, the counter operator said, “The smart card is virtual and so we are now showing the purse virtually too. Thus, helping save paper and trees.” A great way to save paper and trees! Mumbai Metro is into the green scene.

PURPLE SKIES, a feature documentary film about lesbians, bisexuals and transmen, directed by filmmaker and activist, Mumbai’s Sridhar Rangayan just finished a screening in Delhi yesterday, at the India International Center.

Purple Skies is a mix of despair and hope, the victimised as well as hopeful stories of youngsters who have come out of the closet. Young lesbians and bisexuals in the film say they are ready to fight discrimination. Sonal Giani, of Mumbai, an out bisexual activist’s relationship with her same-sex partner Upasana features in the film. Upasana is hopeful that she will have a grand Yash Raj filmi style wedding with Sonal soon.

“I even know what songs we will play at our sangeet and what we will all wear during the mehendi and wedding”, says Upasana. The film now goes to Chicago, Indonesia, the Czech Republic, Seattle and Romania. Well, fly Purple Skies fly, across the seas and of course, the skies.
Bollywood flavour
Even the Divine cannot escape the all-pervasive flavour of the Indian film industry. Bollywood songs are now part of the repertoire of most festivals and GenNext is surely more familiar with these filmy numbers than bhajans or devotional songs.

Well, who are we to judge? All one can say is that amused is our emotion. Recently, a small group of people were taking their Ganesh idol for Visarjan. He was placed on a handcart and was being taken. The group was chanting: Ek, do, teen, chaar… one expected the usual, Ganpati cha jay, jay kaar. Instead, to one’s surprise the group chanted: ‘Ek, do, teen, chaar, mazha Ganpati superstar…’ (One, two, three, four, one Ganpati is a superstar)! Well, surely even the Elephant God is smiling.
