Melbourne: An Australian male model was killed while fighting with Islamic State (IS) militants in Syria, a media report said on Thursday. Somali-origin Sharky Jama, 25, from Melbourne, was living in the Iraqi city of Fallujah, but was shot dead in Syria, ABC reported.

The Somali Australian Council of Victoria said Sharky Jama's father, Dada Jama, received a text message and phone call on Monday, saying his son had died. Dada Jama said he believed the news when he tried to call his son's phone which went straight to voice-mail.

The department of foreign affairs and trade (DFAT) has not confirmed the death, saying its capacity to do so is limited. "Due to the extremely dangerous security situation, consular assistance is no longer available within Syria," a DFAT spokesperson said.

"Australians who become involved in overseas conflicts are putting their own lives in danger," the spokesperson said. "Any Australians fighting with non-state militia in Syria or Iraq should end their involvement in the conflict now and leave the conflict zone," the spokesperson added.
