A 28-year-old sales manager with a Navi Mumbai-based private firm was arrested by the Kapurbawadi police on Wednesday, after he lost control of his car, killing two girls who were standing on a footpath. The incident took place on Sunday at around 8:30pm near Manpada junction on Ghodbunder Road.

Surbhi Gore and Akanksha Kamble
The victims were identified as Surbhi Gore (21), a Bsc (IT) student from a Thane college, and Akanksha Kamble (21), an LLB student, who had recently attended a court trial for the first time. The duo resided at Shruti Gardens in Manorama Nagar in Thane west.
The arrested accused was identified as Nimesh Rane, a sales manager with Bhavna motors in Nerul, and a resident of Vartak Nagar in Thane. “We have arrested the accused on Wednesday and have sent him for a medical test and informed the Regional Transport Office to cancel his licence. Rane owns the car – a Wagon R — and was behind the wheel when he lost control and hit the two girls who were standing on a footpath,” said SD Jadhav, Senior PI Kapurbawdi police station.
Lost control of the car
Rane in his statement to police allegedly said that he and his colleagues had gone to Suraj Water Park for a picnic on Sunday. After returning from the park he headed back to his residence and after changing clothes, he was going to Thane station to drop two women colleagues who had accompanied him. “He was driving the car, MH 04 GZ 2707, and as the road he was to take was closed, he went to take a U turn near Manpada junction and lost control of the car and rammed into the two girls,” added Jadhav, stating that the accused will be produced in Thane court on Thursday. He suffered minor injuries while the two women accompanying him have suffered severe injuries. A case has been registered at Kapurbawadi police station on Monday under Sections 279 (rash driving), 337 (Causing hurt), 338 (causing grievous hurt) and 304 (a) (causing death by negligence) of the IPC and different sections of rash driving of the Motor Vehicle Act. Raj Gore, an IT professional with a private firm and father of Surbhi, said, “We want justice. She was too young and had to fulfill many dreams.”
Family reacts
The Gores claim that the Kapurbawadi police had registered a case saying the girls were riding a Scooty when the accident occurred. But when the family enquired they found that they were standing on the footpath. “The police should register a fresh FIR and clear how the incident occurred so that the accused gets proper punishment. Why it is seen that when we ask the police then only they investigate? Its their job to investigate the case properly as we have lost two lives,” added Gore.

Gore and his wife were in Pune and were on their way back when an auto-rickshaw driver gave a call on his mobile phone and informed them about the incident. “Surbhi told us that she was going for a hair cut, but as the parlour was closed she went to the juice shop, as she loved juice. When we questioned the juice shop owner he said that they had just parked the Scooty and were about to order when the car rammed into them. Both were moved to Titan hospital at Manpada junction, where Surbhi succumbed to her injuries. Kamble was shifted to Vedant Hospital where she died,” added Gore.
