Two newspaper boys who were returning home on their motorcycle after distributing papers in Bhusari Colony were killed after a private bus rammed into their motorcycle. The accident occurred near Kothrud bus depot on Paud Road at 7.15 am yesterday
The deceased were identified as Santosh Dattatray Suryawanshi alias Suraj (16) and Jay Gopal Pawar (19), residents of Karvenagar in Kothurd. Bus driver Jitendra Gavali (27), a resident of Pimpri, fled the spot after the incident but was later apprehended by the Kothrud police officials.

Suraj had recently passed his SSC examination with good marks, while Jay was pursuing his college education.u00a0Senior Police Inspector Kalyan Vidhate of the Kothrud police station said that Jay and Suraj were working for newspaper vendor Balkrushna Shedge and had been given the responsibility of distributing papers in Bhusari Colony everyday.
“On Tuesday morning, after distributing newspapers, they were coming out from one of the lanes of Bhusari colony. While coming out of the lane, which approaches the main Puad Road, Jay, who was riding the bike, tried to cross the road in hurry.u00a0In his hurry, Jay failed to notice the approaching bus, and their bike collided with the speeding vehicle,” Vidhate said. “The impact of the collision was so powerful that Jay died on the spot, while Suraj succumbed to his injuries at a nearby hospital.”
He said that Gavali had been booked under Sections 279 (rash and negligent driving) and 304 (A) (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code and will be produced in the Shivajinagar court today.
“Both the boys had been working with us for over four years now and were contributing the their family incomes. We are shocked to learn that two such hardworking boys had such a tragic end,” Shedge said. He also said that some of the eyewitnesses told him that it was the bus driver’s fault and that he was driving at high speed.
