Barcelona: Espanyol have been fined around Euros 24,000 for their fans displaying a banner about Colombian pop star Shakira during a Copa del Rey match against Barcelona in January, Spanish media reported yesterday.

Barca and Espanyol met thrice  in ill tempered claches in January across the Spanish League and the Copa del Rey. In the January 13, Copa del Rey last-16 second leg encounter, which Barcelona won 2-0, some Espanyol fans held up a banner in Spanish that read ‘Shakira es de todos’.

It meant ‘Shakira belongs to us all’ and was deemed a sexist insult to the pop star wife of Barcelona defender Gerard Pique.
The Spanish sports ministry’s anti-violence committee immediately asked the Spanish Football Association (RFEF) to look into the incident,. The
latest fine is an outcome of RFEF’s investigation.
