Google paid tribute to legendary cartoonist Mario Miranda with a special doodle on his 90th birth anniversary.

Guest Google doodler Aaron Renier, a comic artist known for portraying large crowds like Miranda paid homage to the legendary cartoonist by choosing his most popular style, very flat with criss-crossing interactions.


The doodle depicts a crowded street during a rainy day comprising of as Renier explains a rich litany of people, each unique in their perspective.

Born Mario João Carlos do Rosario de Brito Miranda in Daman, Mario Miranda as he became known popularly was a cartoonist and painter based in Loutolim in the Indian state of Goa.

Miranda was a regular contributor to major news publications in Mumbai. Among several honours, he was awarded the the Padma Shri in 1988, the Padma Bhushan in 2002 and the Padma Vibhushan (awarded posthumously after his passing on 11 December 2011), the second highest civilian award in the Republic of India, by the President on 4 April 2012.

Mario Miranda has held solo exhibitions in over 22 countries, including the United States, Japan, Brazil, Australia, Singapore, France, Yugoslavia, and Portugal. His cartoons grace the walls of one of South Mumbai's most famous hotspots, Cafe Mondegar, in Colaba.

Miranda is also featured in the famous video "Mile Sur Mera Tumhara", which included a host of India's most notable personalities in arts, films, literature, music, and sports. A road junction in Mumbai was named after Miranda in 2013.
