RAJKOT: Riding on opener Rishab Pant’s 40-ball 69, Delhi Daredevils beat table-toppers Gujarat Lions by eight wickets in a Indian Premier League-9 match at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium here on Tuesday.

Under-19 star, Pant, was well supported by his opening partner Quinton de Kock, who scored 46 off 45 balls in Delhi’s 150-run chase. The duo stitched 115-run partnership before Pant was caught by ’keeper Dinesh Karthik off the bowling of Ravindra Jadeja. De Kock departed immediately with the score reading 121-2 after being caught by Dwayne Smith.

By the time the duo departed, the damage was already done as Delhi required only 29 off 31 deliveries.

Sanju Samson (19) and JP Duminy (13) then took over as Delhi chased the target with 16 balls to spare.

Earlier, led by Zaheer Khan, literally and figuratively, the Daredevils managed to tame the Lions in their own den after winning the toss and electing to field. They thoroughly exposed the chinks in the much-hyped opposition top order, which began to fall like nine pins after the experienced left-arm seamer drew the first blood. Zaheer bowled the in-form Brendon McCullum neck and crop for one in the third over of the innings when the Lions were on 15.

Off the very first ball of the next over, orthodox left-arm spinner Shahbaz Nadeem had another danger man, Dwayne Smith, caught by Chris Morris for 15 (14b, 3x4). The next to go was Aaron Finch, who was included in place of Dwayne Bravo to strengthen the batting, caught by Rishabh Pant off Nadeem for five. The Lions were tottering at 3-24 in 4 overs.

A 51-run stand for the fourth wicket between Suresh Raina and Dinesh Karthik did much to repair the damage and restore calm in the chaotic Lions’ den. But as has often been seen in recent times, Raina was looking set for a big innings when he stepped out a bit too far off an Amit Mishra delivery, when on 24 (20b, 1x4, 1x6), only to be stumped.

But Karthik, in fine nick this season, kept the scoreboard ticking in company of the local lad Ravindra Jadeja, who was hitting the ball more confidently.

Captain Suresh Raina (24) played his part in reviving the innings with a 51-run partnership with Karthik while Jadeja chipped in with a useful unbeaten 36 towards the end.

For Daredevils, Shahbaz Nedeem took two wickets while Zaheer Khan, Chris Morris, Mohammed Shami and Amit Mishra got one each.

Karthik reached to his fifty with a boundary but the next ball he was out of the bowling of Mohammed Shami, with the delivery clipping the bails.

James Faulkner (7) could not contribute much as he fell to Chris Morris in the penultimate over. Jadeja hit a six in
the final over which yielded 11 runs and remained not out to see his side set Delhi exactly 150 for a win.
