NEET: SC verdict to coincide with MH-CET tomorrow

May 5 may bring with it bountiful stress for medical aspirants. Tt will be the day they will attempt the MH-CET (Maharashtra Common Entrance Test), as well as wait for the Supreme Court’s verdict on the state’s review petition on the National Eligibility Entrance Test. The SC will take a call on granting permission to conduct separate medical entrance tests rather than holding a single exam — NEET — for at least two years.

The apex court yesterday adjourned the hearing on the plea, which was filed by many states including Maharashtra, till Thursday while asking the health ministry and the Medical Council of India to file their responses.

Parents and teachers of aspirants are worried that the double stress might affect their performance in the exam tomorrow. “I have no words to explain the amount of stress we are going through now. The anxiety level on the day of the examination is going to be double. It is impossible to expect students to remain calm while there is so much uncertainty over the test,” said Sunita Mahajan, a parent.

Dilip Seth, another parent, said, “We do not understand why these decisions are taken in such haste. Children have been working really hard to prepare for it. We appreciate one single entrance test but students need to be given adequate notice.”

On the other hand, teachers look at this exam as the students’ only chance to bag a seat in a good college.

Nayan Varma, a physics teacher who has been coaching students for medical entrance tests, said, “It is important for all students to keep calm and appear for the examination. Otherwise, their performance will not be on a par with their expectations. This is their chance to get admission into a good college because preparing for NEET phase II in just two months is not possible. The syllabus of both the examsis very different and due to sudden demand, books for the national entrance exam are also unavailable in the market.”
