Chhatrapati Shivaji of the Maratha kingdom, who issued a gamut of coins during his reign, called the gold coins Hon, and the copper ones, Shivrai. Mughal emperor, Akbar’s son Jehangir, too, issued a variety of coins but he carved them with the 12 signs of the zodiac — a rarity in those days.

Mintage World

If such fascinating nuggets of information whet your appetite for history, Mintage World is the place for you. The first of its kind in the world, the site was recently launched with the objective of archiving and preserving India’s cultural and historical heritage. The website is dedicated wholly to numismatics (coins), notaphily (currency notes) and philately (stamps).

While the homepage is designed keeping simplicity in mind, there’s a fair amount of activity to keep you engaged. The site is divided into the three categories we mentioned earlier, along with sections like exhibitions to do with numismatics. A factfile lists the number of coins, notes and stamps issued different historical periods right from ancient and colonial to modern. However, not all things are vintage on the site. There’s a section called current news and updates from around the world. Although the site is still in its nascent stage, we’d suggest you check it out. But remember, only if you dig history.
