An inmate of David Sassoon Industrial School, he was raped twice by the accused, also a 17-year-old, and was threatened with dire consequences if he told anyone about it
Just a year since 17-year-old Amir Jamal — an inmate of the David Sassoon Industrial School — died after being assaulted by other inmates while he was in custody, a similar case has emerged from the remand industrial school. Another 17-year-old has alleged that a fellow inmate raped him on two occasions. The Shivaji Park police have registered an FIR in the matter against the accused.

According to the police, the teenager approached a welfare officer on Wednesday morning and told her that an inmate was forcing him to provide sexual pleasure. The official then brought the matter to the notice of his superiors and by afternoon, the FIR was registered. The teenager claimed he was raped on May 29 at about 3 am on his bed and on June 1 at around 7.30 am in the bathroom. He was traumatised when he reached out to the counselling officials on Wednesday.
After the matter was brought to the notice of the police, medical examination of the minor was done at Sion Hospital and investigations were launched into the matter.
They revealed that the accused had also threatened the boy and asked him not to open his mouth regarding the incident, otherwise he would beat him up inside the industrial school and even after he finished his term. The accused had been sent to the industrial school after being arrested by the Rabodi police in Thane under Section 392 (robbery) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) whereas the survivor had been arrested by the Ulhasnagar police under Section 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means) of the IPC.
An officer from the Shivaji Park police station said, “Based on the complaint, we have registered a case under sections 377 (unnatural offences), 507 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code and Sections 4, 8 and 12 of the Protection of Children Against Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The statement of the victim has been recorded. The accused would be arrested in the matter.”

Amir Jamal Khan, a 17-year-old was arrested in a theft case and lodged in the David Sassoon Children Juvenile Industrial school. He died in May last year, 10 days after being brutally assaulted while he was in custody. In his dying declaration, he named two inmates and the warden of the juvenile industrial school for assaulting, torturing and sodomising him. The Shivaji Park police had filed a murder case against three persons after they found injury marks on his body.

While juveniles involved in crimes are mostly sent to the Dongri remand industrial school, the David Sassoon Industrial School is a rehabilitation centre for such children. It teaches them vocational skills, to help them earn a living and also counsels the juveniles during their stay.
