Gangster Kumar Pillai to be brought back to Mumbai on June 27

One of Mumbai’s most educated gangsters Kumar Pillai, who was detained in Singapore in January, will be brought back to the city on June 27. His extradition was initiated based on one piece of evidence Mumbai Police had against him in the only case he was arrested: Fingerprints, which were 26 years old. A Crime Branch source said Pillai would be kept in high security in their lock up in South Mumbai. A senior crime branch officer said, “All the cases against Pillai will be investigated by Mumbai Crime Branch. He will be kept at the lock up in commissioner’s office at Crawford Market. Later he may be shifted to a different place.”

The cops have also made several security arrangements. Officials from all crime branch units will be deployed for security.

Arrested once
Pillai has several cases against him in Mumbai. A crime branch official said, “Pillai has one murder case, two attempt to murder cases, one extortion case and two Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) cases against him. However, the cops only managed to arrest him once.”

mid-day had reported on February 24 about how the extradition was initiated with the help of the fingerprints with Vikhroli Police, which had registered a case against him under section 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by object) of IPC on April 21, 1990. Soon after his arrest, he was released on bail and later fled the country.

Since this was the only case in which he was arrested, cops had taken his fingerprints on three different papers. It took them over a week to find the documents. A dossier of all the cases along with fingerprints was then sent to Singapore. Similarly, 35-year-old fingerprints of underworld don Chhota Rajan had helped the cops bring him back from Bali.
