Mumbai Diary: Monday Dossier

Rahman’s musical stamp on Pele
It’s music is just out, and it sounds fabulous. The soundtrack for Pele: Birth of a Legend is the finest tribute that one legend, AR Rahman, could pay to another. The 20-track album is an ode to the ultimate story of survival, challenges, and eventual success.

The maestro’s music for the film has been dubbed “impeccable” by The Hollywood Reporter. Of his association with this Jeffrey Zimbalist and Michael Zimbalist-directed film, Rahman said in a release, “Being a fan of many South American films, I never imagined that one day, I’d be scoring music for a movie on Pele, the soccer legend from Brazil.

The human story of his life is a lesson for the whole world to believe in their own internal strength and miracles.” This one should make for a paisa vasool trip to the cinema.

Paani problems
Okay, so we’ll put it out there. We’re tired of the brouhaha over Brexit. Desis becoming experts overnight on topics in far, far away lands is becoming more the norm than exception. And Brexit is no different. Everybody has taken to social media to express their opinion, and take sides. Who needs the Beckhams or Sir Ian Botham?

Our fave pick from this side who’ve decided to have some fun with the charade is writer Amish. He tweeted:

Boy 1: Brexit will have serious implications on the UK

Boy 2: Bro you live in Dombivali. Tuesday paani nahin aata hai. Uska tension le.

Roti (and paani), kapda and makaan is more like it.

Flute notes for Strawberry Fields?
Who doesn’t like to indulge in a bit of Beatles nostalgia? And if there’s a musical twist to their tunes, it would make for a memorable evening.

Rajeev Raja
Rajeev Raja

With songs like Hey Jude, Ticket To Ride and I Want To Hold Your Hand on the playlist, this diarist is looking forward to the arrangement for Beatles’ songs by flautist Rajeev Raja, who will draw inspiration from genres like Jazz Fusion, Jazz Funk, Bossa Nova, Cuban, Caribbean and Latin. Raja also promises to weave in interesting anecdotes and back stories behind the band’s most popular tunes together with the musical interpretations. We’ll play along.

Baby, you can drive my car
Last weekend, Mumbai welcomed a new dawn. An uber luxury car brand was launched in India for the first time resetting the benchmark for state-of-the-art, luxe convertibles in the country.

Familiar Mumbai faces who dropped in included Dino Morea, Siddhanth Kapoor, Shibani Dandekar (in pic), Annu Mallik, Sulaiman Merchant. We’re waiting to figure who will be the first A-lister (cricketer, B-town bachcha or biz man) to be spotted zipping in this beauty on Mumbai’s potholed (ouch!) roads.

Multilingual Indian playback and folk singer from Assam, Kalpana Patowary was in her element at a gig over the weekend helmed by ace musician Dhruv Ghanekar (background, left) who launched three new tracks.

Apart from Patowary, Ghanekar had teamed up with a new bunch of names for the gig including young MC/rapper Deka, Kanchan Daniels, and Rohan Rajadhyaksha from Spud in the Box.

We’d like one more, Leander!
He won the Wimbledon junior title in 1989, and won our hearts along the way. Leander Adrian Paes has given India loads to cheer with his triumphs for an astonishing number of years, and the boy-like enthusiasm with which he continues to. His playing partners swear by his commitment while young talent in India can’t seem to get enough when he is in the country.

As the courts of SW19 open up for another edition of the marquee grass court championship today, we’re keeping our fingers crossed that the journeyman bags another (or two) in the doubles’ categories to add to what we can only imagine must be an overflowing mantelpiece. We’ll be cheering for the champ.
