The hardworking policemen in Mumbai keep busy by chasing and catching a myriad number of criminals. But one such criminal — someone who stole 95 crates of tomatoes worth Rs 1 lakh — managed to evade their grasp. Cops from Santacruz police station are looking for Guddu, who is accused of stealing the tomatoes from a wholesaler.

While Guddu is on the run, the vegetable vendor he sold some of the tomatoes to is in police custody. The arrested vendor, Ranjan Jaiswal, was spotted by the wholesaler, Devi Gupta at Antop Hill. Gupta saw Jaiswal selling the tomatoes for R40/kg in Antop Hill – where he claims stolen vegetables and fruits are routinely sold cheap – and decided to report him to the police, suspecting that he was the one who stole his wares. He informed constable Pratap Chavan from Unit 4 of the Crime Branch.

Chavan dispatched a team that caught Jaiswal and seized the tomatoes. Unfortunately, they were able to recover only 69 crates. The rest, Guddu has supposedly fled with. Jaiswal told cops that Guddu sold the tomatoes to him, but cops said they booked him as he was selling the stolen tomatoes. Gupta says he had bought 95 crates – 2,600 kg – of tomatoes from Ahmednagar.

He had kept them near his residence in a Mahindra pick up van. He claims that Guddu allegedly came with his tempo on Thursday night, stole all the crates and escaped. After that, he sold some of them to Jaiswal and kept the rest at a godown in Antop Hill. Gupta's goods have been stolen earlier as well, and he suspects Guddu of those thefts, but he has never registered a case previously. This time, he filed an FIR under section 379 (theft) of IPC with Santacruz police station.
