Mumbai: Police inspector gets shunted over drunken antics

Drunken antics by cops will not go unpunished, as a sub-inspector from the NM Marg police station found out recently, after he was transferred to a more humble posting for insulting his seniors and creating a scene at the police station in an inebriated state.

PSI Sachin Shikhre was not only given a stern warning after the episode, but has also been transferred to the Local Arms division, which has far fewer powers and is not as lucrative a posting.

The incident
On April 6, Inspector Shubhada Chavan of the NM Joshi Marg police station was patrolling at around 2.15 am, when she noticed that Mumbai Darbar, a restaurant at the Currey road-Lower Parel signal junction, was still open despite the 1.30 am deadline.

When she visited the hotel, she found PSI Sachin Shikhre from her own police station there, having dinner with four other people. Inspector Chavan asked a subordinate woman officer to charge the hotel management for flouting the rules. When Shikhre tried to interfere, he and the hotel staff were taken to the police station, said sources.

“At the police station, Shikhre got more aggressive. He first argued with both the women officers, including Chavan, and tried to put pressure on her to prevent any action against the hotel. When this didn’t work, he started shouting loudly in the station house, using foul words. He insulted inspector Chavan in front of other policemen,” said an officer.

Shikhre also paid the hotel waiter’s bail bond of R12,500 from his own pocket, flinging the money on the face of the cop who issued the bail slip. The next morning, seniors were informed about the incident. In an effort to avoid trouble, Shikhre made a false diary entry at the police station, stating that he had gone out to investigate a case, the officer added.

An inquiry report dated July 16 found him guilty. However, Shikhre said, “I had refuted all the allegations during the enquiry, but I was punished and transferred as I am a junior officer.”
