On the occasion of International Tiger Day we bring some 'tigers' who roam in the cities and have brought fame and respect or infamy to this name

It's International Tiger Day, also known as Global Tiger Day, is an annual celebration to raise awareness for tiger conservation.


It's a day to bring worldwide attention to the conservation of tigers.


The majestic tiger with its distinctive orange and black stripes strikes awe and fear in the hearts of any who see it. But their numbers are steadily declining. Of the 100,000 tigers that once roamed in the wild a century ago, only 3,890 are left behind, the World Wide Fund (WWF) for Nature has revealed in a 2016 report.


Hopefully, we will come to our senses and take steps to protect the big cat.

But let's take a lighter look at this day that celebrates tigers with a compilation of 'tigers' who roam in the cities and have brought fame and respect or infamy to this name.

Tiger is the alleged mastermind of the 1993 serial blasts in Mumbai and the prime accused in the case. Ibrahim Mushtaq Abdul Razak Nadim Memon, better known as Tiger Memon, is wanted by Interpol and the CBI. According to media reports, the Central Bureau of Investigation believes Tiger is a 'respectable businessman' in Dubai. The CBI said that Tiger and his brothers owned a construction business and some shops in Dubai in partnership with Anees Ibrahim, brother of underworld don and terrorist Dawood Ibrahim. Having allegedly been given Pakistani identities by Pakistan’s spy agency ISI, he shuttles between Karachi and Dubai.

Tiger Shroff is a Bollywood actor and martial arts exponent. Born to veteran actor Jackie Shroff, he made his film debut in 2014 with 'Heropanti', which earned him an award for Best Male Debut nomination. He then starred in the 2016 action-drama Baaghi and is currently working on 'The Flying Jatt'. Shroff was born as Jai Hemant Shroff on March 2, 1990. In a recent interview to a Mumbai tabloid, he explained how he got the name 'Tiger'. He said, "I got the name Tiger because I used to bite and scratch people as a child."

The 'tiger' has been in the news recently for his court cases, be it the 2002 hit-and-run case or the blackbuck one. Whereas earlier freedom fighter Bipin Chandrapal was known as 'Bengal Tiger', the moniker now belongs to Sourav Ganguly. He is also known as 'Dada', 'Dadi', 'Prince of Kolkata' and 'God on the off-side'. Currently, he is the 8th highest run scorer in One Day Internationals (ODIs). In 2002, the Wisden Cricketers' Almanack ranked him the sixth greatest ODI batsman of all time, next to Viv Richards, Sachin Tendulkar, Brian Lara, Dean Jones and Michael Bevan. One of the most successful captains of the Indian national cricket team, he is currently the President of the Cricket Association of Bengal.

The Bangladesh national cricket team is nicknamed the Tigers. 2015 was an important year for them since they had reason to roar after a long as the Tigers won 4 ODI series in a row. Another time they roared magnificently was during the 1999 World Cup, when the Tigers, led by Akram Khan, beat Pakistan by 62 runs. Asia Cup 2012 was also special since Bangladesh reached the final of the tournament after beating India and Sri Lanka in the group stage. Bangladesh are slowly but surely proving that they can no longer be called minnows, at least in the limited overs format.

Tipu Sultan, popularly known as Sher-e-Mysore (The Tiger of Mysore) was one of the most powerful rulers India ever had. Sultan Fateh Ali Khan Sahab, also known as Tipu Sultan, is remembered for saving the Deccan from the British for a long time. He ruled the Kingdom of Mysore from 1782 to 1799. He is credited with being the 'Pioneer of Rocket Technology' in India. Tipu used tiger imagery extensively to convey a sense of his power. Tiger images emblazoned his golden throne, his textiles, coins, swords and his soldiers' uniforms.

Tiger Prabhakar, also known as Kannada Prabhakar, was an Indian film actor known for his works predominantly in Kannada and Telugu cinema, with a few Malayalam, Tamil and Bollywood films. He is known for his villainous roles. The action king of Kannada film industry passed away on the auspicious day of the Ugadi festival – March 25, 2001.

Mansoor Ali Khan or Mansur Ali Khan sometimes M. A. K. Pataudi, was nicknamed Tiger Pataudi, was an Indian cricketer and former captain of the Indian cricket team. Discussing why he got the 'Tiger' moniker, Pataudi in his autobiography says that he got the nickname as a kid, well before he started playing cricket. He wrote, "I don't know why, except as an infant, it seems, I had a tigerish propensity for crawling energetically about the floor on all fours." Some former cricketers believe he was called 'Tiger' because of his fielding ability.
