Mumbai crime: BPT worker rapes two minor girls, hides at sea

The Cuffe Parade police on Thursday arrested a 55-year-old Bombay Port Trust employee for raping two minor girls, both sisters. On Wednesday evening, accused Mustafa Sakharkar was caught in the act by his neighbours, but he somehow managed to escape on a ship at sea. However, the Cuffe Parade police, with several teams, laid traps near all possible ways out from the sea and on Thursday morning — nearly 12 hours later — he was arrested from the Yellow Gate Jetty when he was getting off his hideout.

'Lured them and threatened them'
Sakharkar works as a greaser with the BPT and lives in the Cuffe Parade area. According to the police, he had constant fights with his wife over various issues and a few weeks ago, she left him to return to her hometown in Ratnagiri. He also has 22-year-old daughter.

In the same locality lived these two minor girls aged 9 and 11. They are partially mentally unstable so Sakharkar lured them in on the pretext of giving them money and chocolates and raped them. He then threatened the girls that if they mention it to anyone, he would kill them and their parents. A police officer said, “The neighbours got suspicious when the girls went in and Sakharkar closed the door. This went on for over 10 days.”

Then on Wednesday evening, the neighbours stormed into Sakharkar’s house and caught him in the act. However, he managed to escape and went to hide out at sea. The neighbours, meanwhile, informed the Cuffe Parade police and lodged an FIR.

Police says
Senior police inspector Deepak Patil said, “We registered a case under section 376 (being a public servant, takes advantage of his official position and commits rape on a woman in his custody) of the IPC and several sections of POCSO Act. On Thursday morning, he was arrested and remanded to police custody by the court. Further investigations are underway in the matter.”
