The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday filed supplementary chargesheet against extradited don Chhota Rajan and other wanted accused in the special MCOCA court in the mid-day investigative journalist Jyotirmoy Dey's 2011 murder case.

Sources say that Rajan's motive behind J Dey's murder was a book that the veteran journalist was writing on underworld in which Rajan was probably shown in a bad light as against against his staunch rival Don Dawood Ibrahim. Earlier police had said that Rajan was upset with the two articles written by Dey that purportedly portrayed him 'as an ageing gangster', and then suspected to have ordered his elimination. Another Dey's article titled: 'Rajan gangsters off to 'pilgrimages' – Cops say many Rajan gang members are missing from their hideouts in the city. A few days later, Dey was shot dead.

In the chargesheet, CBI claims to have mentioned new facts and evidence pertaining to crime scene, conspiracy, specific role of Rajan and other accused and also how the accused carried out the Dey's murder plan.

Public Prosecutor S. Badami said that the CBI has made Raviram Rateshwar, who was earlier a witness in the case, an accused in the case. Badami said that their case is based on the statement of 41 witnesses and other evidence.

During the filing of chargesheet Rajan was present through video conferencing.

Dey was shot dead in June 2011 allegedly at the behest of gangster Chhota Rajan. Four persons on two motorcycles fired four to five rounds from behind at Dey, who was also riding a bike, near Spectra Building at D Mart in Hiranandani area of Powai in Mumbai.

The accused don Rajan was arrested in Bali in October 2015 and deported to India. His arrest was on the basis of an Interpol red-corner notice issued against him way back in 1995 for committing criminal acts such as murder, running an organised crime syndicate, conspiracy etc.

Rajan has over 70 cases against him, including the murder of Dey. After Rajan's deportation to India, the government of Maharashtra had declared that the investigations of all cases against Rajan will be handed over to the CBI.

In February, the gangster submitted his voice samples in connection with the case. Rajan is now lodged in Tihar jail.

In 2012, police filed a charge sheet in J Dey against journalist Jigna Vora in the case. According to the 3,055-page charge sheet, Vora allegedly instigated Rajan to execute Dey owing to professional rivalry. CBI in the cahrgesheet claims that they have matched the voice samples of Rajan and Jigna Vora with their conversation part of murder conspiracy.

Mumbai Police had earlier filed charge sheet against more than 10 accused that mainly includes Rohee Thangappan Joseph alias Satish Kalya, Abhijeet Shinde, Arun Dake, Sachin Gaikwad. Rajan's aide Nayan Singh Bisht is shown as absconding.
