A 91-year-old's passionate symphony
While working on it, director Rafeeq Ellias didn’t realise that his documentary, The Ninety First Symphony — The Musical Journey Of Homi Dastoor, would have such an impact.

The 20-minute film, which salutes the 91-year-old Dastoor’s passion for Western Classical music — his meticulous 75-year-long research on the maestros who shaped the genre — resulted in Musical Journeys: A Personal Introduction To Western Classical Composers that released two years ago, recently won a jury award at the 5th Kolkata Shorts International Film Festival.

“I am happy that it is being seen at screenings. People should know such a man exists. He is a role model,” shared Ellias. When we asked if he had spoken to Dastoor, he laughed, “I am just back from a trip. For him, the film hasn’t ended. He keeps sending me more material for the film.”

Kailash Parbat, with the tipple
Kailash Parbat has been serving the best of all things chaat and chhole since 1952, which is no mean feat. However, we were in for a surprise when we heard that the household favourite has now opened a gourmet fusion restaurant in Bandra!

The menu features dishes like Chipotle Palak Chaat, Lolly Tuk and Cone mein Corn, which are re-invented Kailash Parbat staples. What we’re really interested in, though, is the fact that KP will soon be operating a full service bar at this outpost.

We’ve been told to expect “twisted cocktails” like the Sharabi Lassi, the Jeera Whiskey Sour, a Kailash Parbat take on the classic tipple, and even a concoction that claims to unite the KP Pani Puri with an LIIT. Do you dare?

India is on a art high
Earlier this week, Ranjit Hoskote, art critic, cultural theorist and independent curator, was nominated under the Art Writing category of the 2017 Absolut Art Award. He will compete with nine others in this category for a chance to win the €20,000 (about $22,500) prize, along with an additional €25,000 ($28,100) toward a new publication.

The 2017 Jury – led by Daniel Birnbaum, Director of the Moderna Museet in Stockholm – will choose five finalists from both categories in January 2017, with the winners to be announced at the 57th Venice Biennale in May 2017. The other Indians in the list are Neha Choksi and Asim Waqif, who have been nominated in the art work category.

I’ll never let go

Shuttlecock to surfboard
We nearly fell for this one. Last week, shuttler Ashwini Ponappa tweeted about her surfing exploits with friends in Covelong. The photo had her and her pals do a pretty cool take on shadow surfing.

She added a caption that read: ‘Had the best full body workout ever!! Feeling strong after a good couple of hours in the water with a surf board!’ We wonder if this will spur the champ to try her luck with another sport as well. We’ll be watching.

A mystery box for Zorawar?
