A jeweller from Mumbai on his way back from Raipur discovers his entire bag of sample goods with 9 kg gold worth Rs 3 crore gone while he and his fellow traveller were fast asleep

A city-based jeweller, Ashwin Mehta, was on his way back to Mumbai from Raipur when he discovered his bag containing gold worth Rs 3 crore missing. He lodged a complaint with the Thane GRP, that was later transferred to Kalyan GRP. GRP and RPF are now investigating the matter. “We have found that the robbery took place between Igatpuri and Kalyan between 2.45 am to 4.15 am, when they were sleeping. To that end, the case was further transferred to Kalyan GRP on Saturday. Mehta claims that on alternate years, he visits Raipur to take orders of gold ornaments and has been doing so for the last 17 years. We are checking the CCTV footage of Kasara, Igatpuri and Kalyan railway station to get some lead in the case. Also, we suspect Prajapati’s involvement, and are cross questioning him,” said an officer from the Kalyan GRP.

In Raipur, they show their sample goods to various stores like Shivraj Prakash Chandra Jewelers, Sumit Jewelers, Son and Son Jewelers and Pagariya Jewelers in the Halwai lane and take orders. During their 3-day stay in Raipur, they put up in the Madhuban Hotel
On September 15, the duo board the return train. However, at 4.15 am, when Mehta goes to the washroom, he returns to find the strolley missing. The chain, ironically was still there. Prajapati says he last saw the bag at the Igatpuri station. After searching for a bit, they pull the chain to stop the train
When the train stopped at the Parsik Tunnel, Railway Police Force get on board and question Mehta. He explains the situation to them, who then advise him to go to CST station. After further questioning, Mehta is directed to the Thane GRP where he registers a case on Friday evening
